Bribe Suspect Released

MOSCOW () -- Prosecutors decided Friday to release a senior official in Russia's Federal Bankruptcy Department on bail but said he is still facing charges of bribe-taking, Interfax said.

Deputy department director Pyotr Karpov will have to post bail equivalent to several thousand dollars, an official with the Saratov prosecutor's office said.

Karpov, who headed a commission for the recovery of budget debts, has been arrested for allegedly taking a bribe from an electric machinery company in Saratov to which he rendered consulting services in 1993.

The official, who was not named, said Karpov even might return to his job because "no one has fired him, despite his arrest," Interfax reported.
