Border Issue Said Key

TALLINN ) -- Estonia is to step up efforts to solve an unsolved border dispute with its huge neighbor Russia, a newspaper said Thursday.

Eesti Paevaleht said Prime Minister Tiit Vaehi or Foreign Minister Siim Kallas would be named soon to try and solve one of the key questions for Estonia as it aims for European Union and NATO entry.

"It is one of the key questions if we want to get into the European Union and NATO, as it is not good if we have an unsettled border question," Vaehi's spokeswoman said, confirming the newspaper report.

The two sides have settled the border line but are deadlocked over Russia's refusal to recognize a 1920 peace treaty between the first independent Estonian state and Russia.
