Baltic Shipping Layoffs

ST. PETERSBURG () -- Baltic Shipping will solve its financial problems partly by cutting staff, a senior government official said Tuesday. Boris Grishin, first deputy head of the Federal Maritime Shipping Service, refused to mention how many employees of Baltiiskoye Morskoye Parokhodstvo, would be laid off.

More than 10,000 of the shipping company's employees have filed suits for wage arrears. At some ships, staff have not received wages for months. The Maritime Shipping Service had applied to the Finance Ministry to grant BMP a credit to pay taxes to unfreeze accounts, Grishin said.
