Ax Killing Suspect Denied Bail Plea

WHITE PLAINS, New York -- A Soviet immigrant accused in the ax murder and dismemberment of her scientist-husband has issued an emotional plea to get out on bail, swearing she would not try to escape.

"Everything I love and everything I have is in this country," Rita Gluzman shouted to federal Judge Barrington Parker on Monday. "I have to show to my son, my family, my people that I am innocent.

"I am going to prove I am not guilty or I am going to die," she added, her voice breaking but without tears. "That's it. There is nothing else."

But the judge denied the bail application, tersely responding that there was "a substantial risk of flight."

The prosecution had argued that when Mrs. Gluzman, 48, was captured six days after the murder, she was carrying guidebooks to several countries and had called several international airlines.

The charge against Mrs. Gluzman carries a maximum sentence of life in jail and a $250,000 fine.
