Arts Council Created

MOSCOW () -- President Boris Yeltsin created a Council on Culture and the Arts on Tuesday and named himself chairman, responding to warnings of the decline of Russia's national culture.

"Yeltsin decided to head the new council himself, thus confirming that culture and intellectual life are no less important than national defense and security," the presidential press service said.

Yeltsin's office compared the new council to the two other presidential councils: the Security Council and the Defense Council.

The 40-member advisory council includes well-known film and theater directors, actors, writers, painters, sculptors and other artists, Russian news agencies said.
