Arrest in Book Theft

MOSCOW () -- Police have arrested three suspects in the theft of dozens of rare, old books from a Moscow library and recovered the books, authorities said Monday.

The 198 books, valued at several million dollars, were stolen Sept. 23 from the Central Historical Library. The thieves sawed through window bars.

The books included volumes that belonged to Catherine the Great, who was empress of Russia in the late 18th century, and others published by the Russian printing pioneer Ivan Fyodorov.

The first suspect was detained Oct. 1 and the other two later, police told Interfax on Monday. All three are Moscow residents, they said.
