Anti-Bhutto Rally

ISLAMABAD () -- Police fired salvo after salvo of tear gas shells Monday at hundreds of religious students staging a violent demonstration in the heart of Islamabad to demand Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto resign.

The demonstration, less than 2 kilometers from the parliament building, was orchestrated by Jamaat-e-Islami, or Party of Islam.

The powerful right-wing group staged a similar but larger demonstration Sunday on the outskirts of Islamabad. Protesters trying to reach the capital were forced to retreat after police began firing tear gas.

Jamaat-e-Islami accuses Bhutto of corruption and has called for an Islamic revolution to overthrow her and her left-leaning Pakistan People's Party.
