Afghan, Uzbek Meet

KABUL () -- Afghanistan's ousted President Burhanuddin Rabbani and Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum met Tuesday to explore forming a common front, as forces loyal to Rabbani's military chief Ahmad Shah Masood counterattacked Taliban forces.

Taliban fighters said Commander Basir Solangi, Masood's commander who withdrew north into territory controlled by Dostum as the Taliban pushed north from Kabul, attacked through the Salang Pass and over the mountainsides.

The Taliban fighters said Dostum's men were not involved in the fighting, in which the two sides exchanged artillery, mortar and small arms fire throughout the day.
