Afghan Assault Fails

KABUL () -- Fresh land and air assaults on Afghanistan's Taliban appear to have failed to significantly dent the purist Islamic militia's positions in Kabul and on the front to the north, witnesses said Monday.

Airport sources said warplanes belonging to a northern alliance battling to expel the Taliban from Kabul dropped three bombs inside the airport perimeter Sunday night.

But they said the bombers, sent by Uzbek leader Abdul Rashid Dostum, struck well away from the runway and warplanes sitting in taxi areas, and caused no damage.
