2 Confess to Killing Doctor In-Laws

Two Russian Army deserters were detained by police and confessed on Saturday to killing the parents-in-law of a doctor who treats President Boris Yeltsin, Itar-Tass reported.

Their confession Saturday appeared to be one in a series of blows to the reputation of the demoralized and underfunded armed forces.

Itar-Tass said the police, acting on a tip-off, had found the two deserters in the northwestern region of Karelia carrying documents and other goods belonging to Andrei and Anna Ichko.

ORT Russian Public Television identified the Ichkos as the parents-in-law of Vladlen Vtorushin, who has been treating Yeltsin for two years.

Andrei Ichko was found dead with a skull fracture Wednesday in the stairwell of his Moscow apartment block. The two deserters confessed to killing him with a metal rod and taking his keys from him.

They then entered his apartment and stabbed his wife with the kitchen knife, Itar-Tass quoted a police spokesman as saying. They then fled in their victims' clothes and with their passports and other items, the spokesman said.
