The Voice of Reason

The breakdown in the deal [between Italy's STET and Russia's Svyazinvest] has been attributed for the most part to the Communist victory in parliamentary elections ...

England's Financial Times newspaper had warned about the possible risks: And what if privatization in Russia is suddenly thrown into reverse?

A month ago, Svyazinvest director Alexander Lipatov, expressing his satisfaction with negotiations with the Italians, noted: "When we began to prepare this deal, people said we were crazy. When we sat down at the table and conducted negotiations at such a furious pace and on such a stressful schedule, they thought we were crazy."

Well, it seems that in the final analysis, the Italians heeded the voice of reason.
