Talk-Show Producer Shot in Moscow Home

In an incident which once again highlighted the dangerous nature of the Russian news business, Oleg Slabynko, producer of the popular television talk show "Moment of Truth," was killed by two gunmen in his home late Thursday night.

According to Lidia Ladutkina, a spokeswoman for the Moscow Police, Slabynko was shot four times with nine-millimeter rounds at 10:30 p.m. Thursday in his apartment on Klinskaya Ulitsa. Two gunmen were spotted by a witness while leaving the scene. Police have not apprehended the criminals.

Slabynko's program was broadcast on Russia's second channel and was one of the country's most popular talk shows, famous for the interviews conducted by its host, Andrei Karaulov.

One year ago, Karaulov's close friend, lawyer Dmitry Yakublovsky, was arrested and detained in St. Petersburg on charges of theft. Karaulov said later that Yakublovsky's arrest was political, a result of the struggle between then-Kremlin security chief Alexander Korzhakov and Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, with whom Yakublovsky was affiliated by virtue of his employment with Most-Bank as a consultant.

The Kremlin and Mayor Luzhkov's office had been at odds ever since a Dec. 2, 1994, incident in which a security force dispatched by Korzhakov besieged a branch of Most-Bank.

Spokesmen for "Moment of Truth" declined to comment on the killing, saying that a public statement would be released later.

Slabynko's killing evokes memories of Vladislav Listyev, the famous talk-show host and State Television executive who was shot to death in his home last March. Listyev's murder has never been solved.
