Tajik Clashes Kill 4

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan () -- Four Russian border guards have been wounded in clashes along the border between the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan and its southern neighbor Afghanistan, Interfax reported.

Tajik rebels based in Afghanistan fired rockets at a border post several hundred kilometers south of the capital Dushanbe on Monday, Interfax said Tuesday.

The Russian border guards returned fire using artillery. There was no immediate word on rebel casualties.

Clashes are frequent along the Tajik border, which is patrolled by Russian and Tajik guards. A hard-line government has ruled Tajikistan for the last several years but faces opposition from Islamic rebels who briefly were in power before being ousted.
