Taiwan to Ship Waste

TAIPEI, Taiwan () -- Taiwan plans to ship some 2,000 tons of low-level radioactive waste to Russia this summer amid growing pressure on the island for better environmental protection, officials said Wednesday.

Up to 5,000 barrels of waste will be shipped under an agreement signed last May by Taiwan's state-run Taiwan Power Co. and Russia's Kurchatov Institute, a leading research center with several nuclear reactors, said Chen Fang-hsien, a director at the Taiwanese company.

Details, including costs, are still under discussion, he said. Taiwan currently stores waste at its three existing nuclear plants and at a dump on Orchid Island, about 80 kilometers east of the southern tip of Taiwan.
