State to Pay Depositors

VILNIUS () -- The government of Lithuania, reeling from the closure of its top two banks, said Thursday it would start paying small bank depositors to ease tension among its citizens.

Prime Minister Adolfas Slezevicius also prepared to meet International Monetary Fund and World Bank officials after the Central Bank closed the Innovation and Litimpeks banks at the end of 1995.

The grain purchases would fill regional strategic reserves after Russia's 1995 harvest was hit by drought.
