Slide Kills American

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, Far East () -- An American oil engineer died in a avalanche on Sakhalin Island, reports said Wednesday.

Barry Williamson, 50, of Houston, Texas, died Tuesday when he stepped out of his jeep in the mountains and was buried under an avalanche, Interfax reported from the Far Eastern island.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow could not confirm his death.

Williamson, an employee of the U.S.-Russian Petrosax joint venture, which runs an oil refinery on Sakhalin, reportedly braved a powerful windstorm on the island while trying to get home for a vacation.

Sakhalin was hit by a powerful earthquake Monday night, and it has since been buffeted by a blizzard and heavy winds expected to last until Friday. The regional vice governor, Viktor Loginov, told Interfax that a two-week precipitation norm had fallen on the region in 24 hours Tuesday.
