Seoul Opposes Aid

SEOUL () -- Despite reports of U.S. pressure, South Korea confirmed Thursday it opposes giving further food aid to rival North Korea unless the reclusive communist country eases its hard-line policy and formally requests aid.

Aid from the United Nations and other international groups so far has fallen far short of the North's initial request for over $450 million in assistance.

The UN's World Food Program, which has been assisting the North, has warned that millions of people, including children and pregnant women, might starve without urgent food aid.
