Seles Advances

SYDNEY -- The tennis rehabilitation of Monica Seles continued Thursday as the joint world No. 1 survived a barrage from hard-hitting South African Mariaan de Swardt to advance to the semifinals of the Peters International tennis championships.

While Seles's winning score of 6-3, 6-2 suggested an easy match, the American was thoroughly tested by the bruising power of de Swardt.

That she successfully negotiated the de Swardt test gave cause for hope that Seles is quickly regaining her old form. It also suggested the 22-year-old is on course to live up to her professed desire to be back at the peak of her powers by the time the French Open starts in May.

De Swardt has what Seles rated as the strongest forehand in women's tennis. "She was hitting these forehands and I didn't see them, they had more power than Steffi's," Seles told reporters.
