Sampras-Becker Match

MELBOURNE () -- World No. 1 Pete Sampras enhanced preparations Thursday for the forthcoming Australian Open by organizing a hastily arranged match against his great rival Boris Becker.

America's Sampras, whose original plans to compete at a warm-up exhibition event this week were shelved because of a bout of influenza, will play the fourth-ranked German on Friday, tennis promoter Colin Stubs said Thursday.

Their three-set match has been added to the schedule at the Colonial Classic exhibition event at Melbourne's Kooyong court after a request from both players, said Stubs, the event organizer.

The Australian Open, the first grand slam tournament of the year, begins at Melbourne's Flinders Park on Monday.
