Russians Held in Hash Bust

MARIN, Spain -- Police on Tuesday were unloading what they estimated were 20 tons of hashish off a ship used to smuggle the drugs from North Africa to Spain.

Twelve people, most of them Russians, were also arrested in what police called one of Spain's largest drug hauls.

A police spokesman said the Panamanian-registered Volga I had been under investigation for a few months.

It arrived in the northwestern port of Marin, about 450 kilometers northwest of Madrid, on Thursday. Four Spaniards who appeared to be ready to make contact with the boat were arrested Tuesday, along with the eight crew members, most of whom are Russians.

In addition to the hashish, the ship was carrying a cargo of fish meal. Police had unloaded 12 1/2 tons of the hashish by nightfall Tuesday and said an estimated eight more tons remained on board.
