Rebels Seize Bank

MONROVIA, Liberia () -- Rebels armed with grenades and primitive weapons seized Liberia's central bank in the capital Monrovia, demanding the reinstatement of its sacked governor, police said Thursday.

They said the rebels numbered dozens and were elements of the ULIMO-J militia which clashed repeatedly last week with African peacekeepers in the civil war-ravaged country.

Police described the rebels as ULIMO-J dissidents opposed to the demand by the militia's leader, General Roosevelt Johnson, for the removal of central bank governor Raleigh Seekie.
