Premier in Jeopardy

VILNIUS, Lithuania () -- Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas on Thursday threatened to force Prime Minister Adolfas Slezevicius from office if he did not resign.

The row between the two men has come in the wake of the Baltic state's banking crisis, sparked by the shock closure in December of two of its largest banks.

Slezevicius earlier refused to say if he would heed Brazauskas' call for him to resign but the president's office said the head of state would set a Monday deadline. "The president has decided that if Slezevicius does not resign himself, the president will sign a decree forcing him to do so," said a spokeswoman for the president.
