Phones or Firewood?

CHISINAU, Moldova () -- A severe energy crisis in Moldova has forced some rural residents to chop down telephone poles for firewood.

A load of firewood in Moldova costs about three times the average monthly wage, Itar-Tass said. As a result, rural residents have taken to chopping down utility poles.

The agency said phone service to one village, Volchinets, went out after residents chopped down all the village's 12 or more telephone poles.
