Perry: NATO No Threa

WASHINGTON () -- Defense Secretary William Perry has predicted that Russia will come to understand that it is not threatened by the "inevitable enlargement of NATO."

"Four times in the past year and a half, the armed forces of Russia and America, once trained to fight each other in war, have trained together in peace," he said Wednesday.

Central European governments, particularly Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, want the protection of NATO membership. Russian President Boris Yeltsin's government has resisted that movement, and resistance could grow with the new strength of Communists and nationalists in the Russian parliament.
