No Golds, but Good Enough

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands -- Rintje Ritsma of the Netherlands claimed a third straight all-round title in the European Speedskating Championships, without winning a single event.

Germany's Gunda Niemann won her seventh all-round women's title in eight years after a 5,000 meters victory in 7 minutes 23.58 on Sunday.

Ritsma took the 10,000 meters silver in 14:14.75, racing in the final round against Dutch rival Ids Postma, whose fourth place in 14:26.78 was enough to give him the all-round silver.

The 10,000 gold went to Bart Veldkamp, a Dutchman by birth who now holds Belgian nationality, in 14:11.63.

Martin Hersman completed a Dutch sweep of the men's all-round, taking bronze after placing fifth in the 10,000.

Ritsma finished with 159.756 points, ahead of Postma with 160.175 and Hersman with 161.392.

Earlier in the day, Niemann coasted past German Claudia Pechstein to take the 5,000 meters gold in 7:23.58. Pechstein took silver in 7:28.54. Niemann's main rival for the all-round title, Dutch woman Annamarie Thomas, held off Pechstein to claim the all-round silver.

Niemann, who also won Saturday's 3,000 meters, finished with 170.232 points. Thomas, who won the 500 and 1,500 sprints, scored 172.133, ahead of Pechstein's 162.763.
