More Jobless Take Dole

MOSCOW () -- The number of people applying for Russia's meager unemployment benefits rose more than 40 percent in the past year, the Federal Employment Service said Monday.

About 2.3 million Russians -- 38 percent of the 6 million unemployed -- were reported receiving the benefits as of Jan. 1, up from 1.6 million a year earlier. Average payment is 120,000 rubles (about $25) a month.

Total unemployment figures have risen less sharply: The State Statistics Committee said 8.2 percent of the working population was unemployed, compared with 7.1 percent a year ago.
