Manila Clears Squatters

MANILA () -- Demolition teams tore down shanties in a Muslim enclave in the heart of Manila on Tuesday, expelling thousands of people as part of a program to rid the national capital of squatters.

With more than 300 policemen standing guard, blue-helmeted crews descended on the shanties early in the morning. Within several hours, the streets and a waterway in the notorious Quiapo district were clear, opening up a view of the Manila Golden Mosque and Cultural Center.

Researchers say more than a third of metropolitan Manila's population of 7 million are squatting, or illegally occupying government or private land.
