Late Goal Lifts Birmingham Into Cup Semifinals

BIRMINGHAM, England -- Birmingham reached the semifinals of the League Cup for the first time in 29 years with a 2-1 win over Norwich on a goal with 90 seconds to play by Liam Daish.

Jan Molby tied the match for Norwich 1-1 in the 78th minute Wednesday, setting the stage for Daish's winning goal on a header.

Birmingham will face Premier League Leeds in the two-leg semifinals after winning the quarterfinal replay. Birmingham and Norwich -- both first-division teams -- tied their first third-round match.

In the other semifinal, Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Arsenal will square off.

In Bilbao, Spain, defending champion Real Madrid rolled over Athletic Bilbao 5-0 Wednesday, bringing a smile to the face of Real's new coach Arsenio Iglesias who replaced the fired Jorge Valdano earlier this week.

"We fought hard,'' said a soft-spoken Iglesias, who coached Deportivo de La Coruna last season. "We're very happy with the win.''

Danish midfielder Michael Laudrup had two goals and an assist.

Bayern Munich's star forward J--rgen Klinsmann will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage in his left knee and will likely miss two weeks, his Bundesliga club said Wednesday.

Klinsmann injured the knee during a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Italian first-division team Cagliari Tuesday on the island of Sardinia.

Chelsea striker Mark Hughes was suspended for five matches and Newcastle winger David Ginola for three on Wednesday after their recent sendings off in the English Premier League.

Lee Chapman, sent off against West Ham while playing for Leeds on loan from Ipswich, has also been banned for three games. ()
