King Returns to Work

RABAT, Morocco () -- Moroccan King Hassan has dispelled talk of a possible abdication with his return to work after a two-week rest due to illness, but diplomats noted signs his grip on power may be slackening.

One of the world's longest-serving rulers, the monarch has packed the last two weeks with numerous official ceremonies and visits with foreign envoys.

However, diplomats also point to confusion that arose during the king's convalescence late in December. Islamist leader Abdsalam Yassine, who has been under house arrest for six years, was allowed a brief spell of freedom only to be incarcerated again a few days later. "This would never have happened if the king was fully in charge," one official said.
