Italy Debates Dini's Fate

ROME () -- Italy's parliament, more divided than ever, met Wednesday to debate the fate of Prime Minister Lamberto Dini with the outcome shrouded in a fog of confusion.

Members of the lower house of parliament have to decide whether to keep Dini in office or rise for an early general election.

Dini, installed for a stop-gap term a year ago, urged deputies Tuesday not to plunge Italy into chaos by removing his unelected, technocrat government.

No elected leader in Italy has been able to patch together a majority in parliament since a coalition government led by Silvio Berlusconi collapsed after seven months at the end of 1994.
