Iraq Slams UN Terms

BAGHDAD () -- Iraq on Thursday dismissed as "vicious and unfair" a UN resolution allowing it to sell limited amounts of oil.

Justice Minister Shabib al-Maliki said the terms the UN attached to the sales were like "the insertion of poison in honey."

"The resolution is iniquitous and unfair and touches on the national sovereignty and achieves nothing for the Iraqi people," Maliki said.

But he added that in the light of the suffering of the Iraqi people Baghdad was ready to accept "any resolution" that would alleviate hardship and not violate sovereignty.

Maliki's remarks echoed a similar statement by Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz on Wednesday in which he ruled out Iraq's acceptance of the UN plan but said it was ready to discuss the deal if no conditions were attached.
