Interior Minister Out

VILNIUS, Lithuania () -- Lithuania's interior minister, criticized for his actions in connection with the closure of two commercial banks before Christmas, has handed in his resignation, Lithuanian radio reported.

It said Sunday that Romasis Vaitekunas, who has been interior minister since December 1992, had handed in his resignation over the weekend to President Algirdas Brazauskas who is likely to accept it later this week.

Vaitekunas had come under fire for allegedly withdrawing $2,000 from Innovation Bank only two days before the Central Bank of Lithuania moved to close the bank on fraud suspicion.
