Indonesia Ravaged

PALU, Indonesia ( -- Indonesian police combed a remote isthmus on Sulawesi on Wednesday to check damage and casualties following a powerful earthquake and tidal waves that killed at least eight people.

In a separate disaster, at least 16 people were killed and thousands made homeless after flash floods struck the island of Sumatra, 2,400 kilometers away, on Monday, officials said Wednesday.

The tidal wave was spawned by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, one of the strongest in recent years to hit earthquake-prone Indonesia.

The Antara news agency reported from Palu, capital of Central Sulawesi, a total of 238 aftershocks had jolted the area since the quake first struck.

The casualties were in Damsol village, on Sulawesi's west coast, where hundreds of building had been damaged.
