Hong Kong Panel Set

BEIJING () -- China's plans for recovering Hong Kong in 1997 entered the final stage Friday with the establishment of a powerful committee that will set up the colony's new government.

President Jiang Zemin said taking over Hong Kong was the first step in the "great cause of reunification."

The Preparatory Committee for Hong Kong, a group of 150 mainland and Hong Kong businessmen, officials, academics and other prominent figures, was established during a ceremony attended by China's top leaders.

One of its main tasks will be to choose 400 people who will recommend to Beijing a chief executive to run Hong Kong after July 1, 1997.
