EU Diphtheria Aid

BRUSSELS, Belgium () -- The European Union granted 2 million European currency units ($2.6 million) Wednesday to help fight diphtheria in several countries of the former Soviet Union.

The EU executive Commission said the funds would be given to relief organizations for vaccination projects in Russia, Tajikistan, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The Commission said there were about 50,000 cases of diphtheria in the former Soviet Union in 1994, 80 percent of them in Russia.
