Corsican Wins Rally

MONTE CARLO () -- A faultless drive through the last night allowed Frenchman Patrick Bernardini to secure his first win in the Monte Carlo rally Thursday.

Bernardini took no chances in his Ford Escort to reach the gambling capital in the lead as his rivals suffered on roads covered with snow in the mountains overlooking the principality.

The Corsican driver, making only his second appearance in the winter classic, won with a comfortable margin of three minutes 44 seconds on Francois Delecour of France, second in a Peugeot 306.

Pre-race favorite Armin Schwarz of Germany, who survived a scare when his Toyota Celica went off the road in the night's first timed stage, came in third, 7:12 behind the winner.
