Britain Denies Tactic

LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland () -- Britain denied an accusation by Irish Foreign Minister Dick Spring that it was deliberately trying to cause splits within the Dublin government over how to achieve peace in Northern Ireland.

"We don't want to divide nationalist opinion whether it's in the Irish government or it's outside," Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Patrick Mayhew told BBC television Sunday.

Spring said on Irish radio earlier that London's proposal for holding elections in Northern Ireland before all-party peace talks start was an attempt at "divide and conquer" politics.
