Boston Sperm to Kiev

BOSTON () -- Sperm from American donors may help repopulate Ukraine, where infertility has been an enormous problem since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster 10 years ago.

The New England Cryogenic Center has contracted with Kiev officials to supply them with equipment and training to open a sperm bank and insemination clinic. None of the donors is Ukrainian, but some have Russian or Slavic backgrounds, said John Rizza, who operates the cryogenic center.

Ukrainian officials have banned sperm and egg donations by Ukrainians because of possible contamination.
