Bloody Coup in Niger

NIAMEY, Niger () -- The army colonel who seized power in a bloody weekend coup said Monday he did it to save the country from catastrophe, but he gave no indication when, or if, he planned to return the troubled desert nation to civilian rule.

Two days after the sudden ouster of President Mahamane Ousmane's civilian government, soldiers guarded intersections across the capital.

Ousmane was placed under house arrest Saturday when Colonel Barre Mainassara Ibrahim led soldiers in a takeover of the presidential palace and government buildings. Five people were killed and a dozen wounded in gun battles.
