Aluminum Pact Praised

BRUSSELS () -- An international arrangement to curb aluminum supplies, which is due to expire in February, helped integrate Russia into the world market, European Commission sources said Tuesday.

"It eased the transition of the Russian aluminum industry into the world market," a source said, noting Russia was now exporting 2.2 million tons a year without disrupting world markets.

The 1994 Memorandum of Understanding was drawn up after a flood of Russian aluminum exports helped destabilize the market, the sources said.
