Airman's Hunger Strike

MOSCOW () -- A Russian crew member of the IL-96 plane seized by the Afghan Taliban opposition group began a hunger strike Thursday, Interfax reported.

Navigator Alexander Zdor demands that Russian authorities step up their efforts to free him and the other Russian airmen the rebels have been holding hostage since Aug. 3.

Anatoly Kalunov, commercial director of the Kazan-based Aerostan Airlines, which owns the seized plane, told Interfax that Aerostan officials hoped to contact Zdor through a representative and persuade him to end the strike.
