African Cup Waits

JOHANNESBURG () -- Despite statements from Nigeria to the contrary, a top FIFA official said Wednesday he expected the Nigerian soccer team to participate in the African Cup of Nations tournament.

Sepp Blatter, secretary general of the governing body of world soccer, said Nigeria's threatened boycott of the African championships was "not good for football."

He said that although Nigerian military leader General Sani Abacha maintained Tuesday that the defending champion Super Eagles would boycott the tournament, Nigeria has taken no formal steps to withdraw.

"I still believe they will be there" for Nigeria's opening Pool C match Sunday in Durban against Zaire, Blatter said after arriving in Johannesburg with FIFA President Joao Havelange and other top officials.
