U.S. Rep 'Cautions' on Russian Media

In spite of the robust development of a free press in Russia, the early signs of restrictions on the media bear careful watching, U.S. Representative Tom Lantos told a press conference Wednesday. "I am not overly concerned about threats against the media," he said. "I have just seen enough indications in recent months to hoist the flag of caution." Lantos said the government was "overzealous" for bringing a lawsuit recently against the NTV television show "Kukly," which satirizes political leaders. The California Democrat said he would introduce a resolution in Congress this fall congratulating Russia on advances made in building a "free and open and democratic society" but "reminding" of the need for a free press.
