Terrorists Arrested in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Police have arrested terrorists accused of planting two large bombs that were aimed at killing Azerbaijani leader Heidar Aliyev, a top official said Thursday.

Police last week recovered two 70-kilogram containers with explosives hidden beneath a bridge on the way from the airport to the capital, Baku, Interior Minister Ramil Usubov said.

Aliyev often uses the road to get to the city from his dacha in the countryside, Usubov said. Wires stretched from the bombs to a building near the bridge.

"The terrorists confessed that they planned to kill the president," Usubov said. He did not say how many people were arrested.

Police suspect the men were backed by supporters of Rovshan Dzhavadov, the former commander of a special police unit. In March, Dzhavadov led a coup along with his brother and was killed in a clash with government forces.

The government, at an emergency meeting Tuesday, ordered security to be tightened around public buildings including the railway station and ministries.
