Tajik Drug Jeep Seized

MOSCOW () -- Russian border guards seized 370 kilograms of narcotics in the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan, authorities said Monday.

A spokesman for the border guards said the drugs were found in a jeep carrying four passengers which was stopped at a post in Murgab, in Tajikistan's eastern region of Badakhshan.

No details were given on the type of drugs found. Border guards have already confiscated 627 kilograms of raw opium in Tajikistan this year.

Anti-government rebels smuggle drugs across the rugged Afghan border into the former Soviet Union to raise cash to buy arms.

Russia keeps nearly 25,000 soldiers and border guards in Tajikistan.
