Swim Coach Grounded

CANBERRA, Australia () -- Gennadi Touretski, the Russian-born head swim coach at the Australian Institute of Sport, has been suspended following his conviction on assault charges.

Australian Sports Commission executive director Jim Ferguson said Wednesday that Touretski has been suspended with pay pending further talks.

Touretski was fined U.S. $10,000 and sentenced in Honolulu to 30 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to assault charges on a United Airlines trans-Pacific flight.

Touretski, allegedly drunk at the time, admitted poking a fellow passenger in the eye, jumping on another passenger, shoving a flight attendant and biting the forearm of the flight's first officer.
