Space Probe Launched

MIRNY, Northern Russia () -- Russia launched a satellite Thursday from its Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia to study the earth's magnetosphere and its "trail" from space, Itar-Tass said.

The 1,250-kilogram Interball-1 satellite was built in Russia. Its scientific instruments were designed at the Russian Academy of Science's Institute for Space Research with the cooperation of scientists from 12 other countries.

Plesetsk will launch Chile's first satellite along with its own Okean-1 craft together on one Cyclone booster rocket Aug. 28, said General Vladimir Ivanov, commander of Russia's space defense forces. The two satellites will separate upon reaching their target orbit.
