Russia Pressures Iraq

KUWAIT () -- Russia said Thursday it would ask Baghdad to step up the search for Kuwaitis who disappeared during its 1990-91 occupation, an issue central to a dispute over sanctions against Iraq.

"Clarification of the fate of Kuwaiti detainees and missing people is still an issue of extreme priority," Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev said in a statement at the end of a 24-hour visit to the Gulf state.

"We will continue our efforts with the aim of solving the problem, using our capacities for influence in our contacts with Baghdad," he said before leaving for Moscow.

Kuwait, backed by its ally the United States, says Iraq should account for 600 missing Kuwaitis, among other demands, before an embargo on its oil exports can be lifted.
