nCamp Dwellers Return

KIBUMBA CAMP, Zaire -- Thousands of Rwandan refugees who had fled into the mountains to escape forced expulsions from Zaire returned to their camps Friday.

Toni Stadler, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, or UNHCR, in Uvira, south of Goma, said about half of the estimated 100,000 refugees had returned as of Friday, upon learning that the Zairean army had suspended mass deportations of refugees to Burundi and Rwanda on Thursday when the UNHCR offered to resume its voluntary repatriation program.

Many of the estimated 1 million Rwandan Hutu refugees in eastern Zaire fear being killed on return in reprisal for last year's genocide in Rwanda of up to a million Tutsis and Hutu moderates.
