Missile Tests End

BEIJING -- China announced Friday the end of 11 days of missile and live artillery tests in the East China Sea just north of rival Taiwan, but diplomats expected to see more tests in the run-up to the island's presidential elections in March.

The tests were widely seen as a deliberate attempt to intimidate Taiwan as slowly thawing relations worsened after Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui was allowed to make a private visit to the United States.

Lee's visit enraged Beijing, which saw it as a move towards independence by the island. China regards Taiwan as a rebel province and believes it should not have independent foreign relations.
